The MG Windsor EV, which has quickly become a popular electric car in India since it first came out in September 2024, is getting a big update. Sources say that JSW MG Motor India is getting ready to launch a 2025 version of the Windsor EV. This new version will have a bigger battery and added safety technology called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This move is to make the Windsor EV even stronger in the Indian EV market and give customers what they want: more driving distance and better safety. The launch is expected in May 2025, with some saying it will be in the second week of the month.
Bigger Battery for Longer Drives
The current MG Windsor EV has a 38 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, which can go 332 km on a single charge according to ARAI. While this is similar to some other cars in its class, adding a bigger battery will be a big improvement. Many believe the 2025 model will have a battery between 50 kWh and 55 kWh.
Interestingly, the Wuling Cloud EV, which is basically the same car as the MG Windsor EV but sold in Indonesia, already has a 50.6 kWh battery. It claims to go 460 km based on CLTC standards. Experts think the Indian Windsor EV with the bigger battery could travel close to 400 km in real-world conditions. This is much more than the current model. This longer range will make the Windsor EV better for longer trips and make people less worried about running out of battery.
Adding Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
Besides the bigger battery, the 2025 MG Windsor EV is also expected to have ADAS features. The current model doesn’t have ADAS, but it hasn’t hurt its sales much, especially since its main competitor, the Tata Nexon EV, also doesn’t have this technology. However, to better compete with upcoming EVs like the Tata Curvv EV and the Hyundai Creta Electric, adding ADAS is a smart move.
The ADAS features for the Windsor EV could include things like:
- Automatic Emergency Braking (the car can brake on its own if needed)
- Adaptive Cruise Control (the car can keep a set distance from the car in front)
- Lane Keeping Assist (the car helps you stay in your lane)
- Blind Spot Monitoring (the car warns you if there’s a car in your blind spot)
- Traffic Sign Recognition (the car can read and show you traffic signs)
- Surround View Monitoring (you can see a 360-degree view around the car)
Adding these features will not only make the car safer but also make it look like a more high-end and modern option in the Indian EV market.
How it Will Affect the Market and Price
The MG Windsor EV has already done very well in India, selling over 20,000 cars in just six months. This makes it the fastest EV in India to reach this number. Its success is likely because it’s priced well, has good features, and offers a unique option to rent the battery (Battery-as-a-Service or BaaS), which makes the car cheaper to buy upfront.
The new version with a bigger battery and ADAS will probably cost a bit more than the current model, which is priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹16 lakh (before taxes). However, even with a small price increase, the updated Windsor EV will likely still be a good value compared to its competitors, offering a good mix of range, features, and price.
In Conclusion
The 2025 MG Windsor EV looks like it will be a big improvement over the current model, giving customers what they want in terms of longer driving range and better safety features. With a bigger battery and ADAS, the Windsor EV is in a good position to become even more popular in the growing Indian electric car market and better compete with other EVs. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the official launch in May 2025.
