Actor Wyatt Russell has teased that the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film “Thunderbolts” will be a departure from the franchise’s usual formula. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell said that the film will be “not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past.”
“It’s a different kind of Marvel movie,” Russell said. “It’s got a different tone, a different feel. It’s not going to be your typical superhero movie.”
The film will reportedly focus on a team of anti-heroes, or supervillains who are forced to work together for a common goal. Russell will reprise his role as John Walker, also known as U.S. Agent, from the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Russell said. “It’s going to be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.'”
Russell’s comments have fueled speculation that “Thunderbolts” could be a more morally ambiguous film than some of the MCU’s previous installments. The film’s director, Jake Schreier, is known for his work on independent films, such as “Robot & Frank” and “Lieve Low.”
“Thunderbolts” is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
