Meg Ryan and David Duchovny are reuniting on screen for the first time in over two decades in the new romantic comedy, “What Happens Later.” The film, which Ryan also directed, tells the story of two ex-lovers who reconnect after years apart and find themselves rekindling their old feelings.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Ryan and Duchovny discussed their new movie and revealed their personal favorite romantic comedies.
“I love romantic comedies,” Ryan said. “They’re a way to escape from the real world for a while and believe in love.”
Duchovny agreed, adding, “I think romantic comedies are important because they remind us that love is possible, even in the most difficult of circumstances.”
When asked about their favorite romantic comedies, Ryan said she loves “Bringing Up Baby,” the 1938 film with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Duchovny joked that his favorite romantic comedy is “Last Tango in Paris,” the controversial 1972 drama that starred Marlon Brando.
“I think ‘Bringing Up Baby’ is a perfect example of a screwball comedy,” Ryan said. “It’s funny, romantic, and completely absurd. I love the chemistry between Hepburn and Grant, and I think the film is still just as enjoyable today as it was when it was first released.”
Duchovny explained that he chose “Last Tango in Paris” as a joke, but he added that he does appreciate the film for its raw and emotional portrayal of love.
“I think ‘Last Tango in Paris’ is a very powerful film,” Duchovny said. “It’s not a traditional romantic comedy, but it is a film about love and desire. I think it’s a film that everyone should see at least once.”
In addition to discussing their favorite romantic comedies, Ryan and Duchovny also talked about their new movie, “What Happens Later.”
“I think ‘What Happens Later’ is a very special film,” Ryan said. “It’s a film about love, second chances, and finding your way back to the person you’re meant to be with.”
Duchovny agreed, adding, “I think ‘What Happens Later’ is a film that will resonate with audiences of all ages. It’s a film that’s both funny and heartwarming, and it’s a film that reminds us that love is never too late.”
“What Happens Later” is in theaters now.
